Wiebke Schloemer, regional director of IFC's Central Asia and Europe, said: "The strong interest of funders and the number of tendering companies indicate that funders are interested in Uzbekistan projects."

"This demonstrates the firm commitment of the Uzbek government to increase participation in the private sector. Open, competitive and bright processes will bring determination to Uzbekistan's infrastructure solutions and will invent higher value for this country." ""

"The number of companies interested in Uzbekistan's first competitive bidding solar project strongly suggests that the government's decision to develop this project in a competitive and sensible way has been well received by the funders," said Igor PPP regional manager Georgi Petrov.

“This project helps to establish the determination of funders to lay the foundation for more funding.”

In order to advance the procurement process, Uzbekenergo will evaluate the qualifications of these companies to determine which companies meet the standards set by the Uzbek government for the project and publish a list of candidate companies.

Another 100MW project in Samarkand, led by Uzbekenergo, is also under development. The project was funded by the Asian Development Bank and was built by China Xingye Solar Technology Holdings Co., Ltd.

Uzbekistan now relies primarily on fossil fuels to meet energy needs, especially natural gas demand. Hydropower is the only renewable energy source in the country, accounting for only about 2% of primary energy supply.
